High Park in Toronto
High Park is a large public park in Toronto, Canada. The park grounds were first opened to the public in 1876 by the City of Toronto. The park is nearly 400 hectares in size and is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The park is home to many different attractions, including an outdoor swimming pool, a zoo, a playground, and a variety of sports fields. High Park is also a popular spot for picnics and for taking walks through the beautiful nature trails.
It includes educational facilities, sporting facilities, cultural and educational facilities, gardens and playgrounds, as well as a zoo. It was originally part of a land grant to John Graves Simcoe (1st Baron Simcoe) in 1793 by King George III. The land was transferred to the City of Toronto in 1875.
High Park has been designated an official Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 1988.[3] It is located in the central part of Toronto on top of bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario. The park’s 624 acres (2.6 km2) include the Toronto Zoo at its eastern edge and the Seaton House at its western edge.[4] The park was first opened to the public in 1876 when it was known as “Deer Park”. It was renamed after its largest asset — High Bluff — in 1899.[3]
In addition to its recreational activities, the park also serves as an important natural resource for Toronto’s residents by acting as an outdoor classroom for local schools.[4]
The park is located in the city’s West Don Lands neighbourhood and is 1.5 km² (0.6 sq mi) in size. It has an area of approximately 12 hectares (30 acres). The park contains over 1,000 different plant species, including more than 500 varieties of trees and shrubs. The park also includes more than 700 different varieties of wildflowers, 200 species of birds and mammals (all endangered), 100 types of butterflies and other insects, and several rare snakes, frogs and salamanders.
High Park has a rich history with many legends surrounding it dating back to Native peoples who lived in this area over 2000 years ago. The park was named after an inn called High Park House which was located at what is now the southern end of the park but was then part of a large farm owned by James Simpson Gardiner (1792-1863).
